During his medical exam on two kittens a family had just found, Dr. Rana found a cuterebra in one of their necks! Cuterebra are a kind of fly that likes to burrow into the skin of rabbits. Cats and dogs can get cuterebra from sniffing around and sticking their heads near the entrance of a rabbit hole, or from other rodents like mice. Luckily it is very rare!
That’s likely how this little guy, appropriately named “Orangie” got the cuterebra in his neck. Thankfully, Dr. Rana was easily able to remove it. Orangie quickly recovered with an antibiotic injection and is a happy healthy kitten still coming to visit us for regular vaccine care!
